Closet System Installation in Charlotte: Check the Fit Before Assembly
A closet organizer can be the right size on the product page and still be wrong for the room. Ceiling height, baseboards, a sloping floor, door swing, and the wall available for anchoring all matter. Before buying IKEA PAX, an Elfa-style track system, wire shelving, rods, or a drawer kit, measure the actual space and keep the exact product plan and instructions together.
What should you measure before ordering?
Measure the closet width at the floor, middle, and near the ceiling. Measure floor-to-ceiling height in several places, including where each frame will stand. Note baseboards, crown molding, outlets, vents, switches, access panels, and any wall that is out of plumb. Check the depth from the back wall to the doorway and leave working space in front of the system.
Then open the room door, closet door, and any nearby cabinet doors. A wardrobe can fit into the opening yet leave too little room for hinged doors, drawers, or pull-out accessories. If the layout uses sliding doors, check the space needed to install the top hardware as well as the final height. The room also needs a path for the boxes: doorway, hallway, stairs or elevator, and space to unpack and assemble.

Will IKEA PAX fit under your ceiling?
Start with the exact US frame article number and assembly manual, not a clearance number from a different PAX. IKEA's US PAX ceiling-height guidance distinguishes hinged or no doors from sliding doors and notes that external lighting needs more space. Those are useful planning questions, but the chosen frame's current US product page and manual control the installation method.
For example, IKEA's US page for foldable wall-mounted PAX frame 705.881.67 describes assembly upright in the intended spot, a wall rail, and separate ceiling requirements for the frame and sliding doors. A different frame or older flat-pack version may assemble differently. Do not assume the finished wardrobe height is enough room to build it, raise it, fit the doors, or add lighting. Compare the product's stated requirements with your lowest measured ceiling point, then verify the manual for the specific combination.
PAX wall anchoring is part of the job, not an optional finish. IKEA warns that its cited frame must be secured to the wall with the enclosed device and fasteners suitable for the wall. If a rental or building will not permit the required attachment, resolve that before buying. We will not treat an unanchored PAX as a completed installation.
Baseboards, doors, drawers, and assembly sequence
Baseboards may keep a frame from sitting where the plan shows it; a sloping floor can make doors and drawer fronts harder to align. Do not order a full-width run from the wall-to-wall measurement alone. Leave room to level and fasten each unit as its manual specifies, and decide how trim or gaps will be handled before delivery.
The saved IKEA plan should show every frame, hinge, door, drawer, shelf, and accessory. IKEA's PAX door guidance notes that hinge positions affect drawer placement. Lighting and sliding-door hardware can also change the assembly order and required access. Follow the instructions for the selected parts rather than assuming all PAX combinations go together the same way. IKEA recommends two people for PAX assembly.
Tracks, wire shelves, and closet rods still need a plan
PAX is only one closet option. An Elfa-style track system needs a suitable wall attachment and level rail layout. Wire shelves and rods need brackets and anchors chosen for the wall and intended clothing load. A small reach-in closet may work better with an open system than a full wardrobe, especially when doors or floor space are tight. Drawers, pantry shelving, and laundry storage add their own depth and access questions.
Existing holes, loose drywall, plaster, and old shelving removal can change the work.
