Charlotte Storm Prep — What a Handyman Actually Does
Charlotte isn't on the coast, but we still get hurricane remnants every June through November (Florence in 2018, Ian in 2022, Helene in 2024). Add ice storms in January and 70-mph spring thunderstorms, and your home faces serious weather four months of the year. A weekend of handyman prep work can prevent the $4,000 to $15,000 storm-damage repair calls we see every fall. Here's the real checklist — what we charge, what you can DIY, and what's worth paying for.
The Charlotte Storm Reality
Charlotte sits about 175 miles inland but Tropical Storm Helene in September 2024 still brought 60+ mph winds and 8 inches of rain to Mecklenburg County. Power was out for 100,000+ homes for 3–6 days. Trees fell on roofs, gutters tore loose, and windows blew in across Plaza Midwood, Dilworth, Myers Park, and NoDa.
The homes that came through best had three things done in the prior month: gutters cleared of debris, loose siding/trim secured, and outdoor objects either anchored or stored. We saw the pattern repeat with each named storm.
We don't sell storm panic — we sell maintenance done before the forecast lights up. June 1 to November 30 is hurricane season; the smart window for prep work is May to mid-June.
Pre-Season Checklist We Run
Gutter clean + downspout flow test. $145–$245 depending on roof access. We pull leaves and debris, then run a hose to confirm downspouts drain at least 6 feet away from the foundation. Charlotte's clay soil doesn't absorb water — pooling near the foundation in a Helene-level rain caused dozens of basement flood calls we got that week.
Loose siding and trim re-secure. $125–$225. We walk the exterior and re-screw or re-nail anything that rattles. Common spots: J-channel above garage doors, soffit panels, fascia corners, vent boots on the roof.
Window weep-hole clean and storm-shutter prep. $85–$155. Vinyl windows have weep holes at the bottom of the exterior frame that drain rainwater. Charlotte pollen and dirt clog them in 2–3 years. When weep holes are blocked, rain drives back into the wall. We probe them clear.
Outdoor object anchor / removal. $95–$195. Patio umbrellas, grills, lightweight chairs, planters — anything under 30 lbs becomes a projectile in 60-mph wind. We help move it to the garage or anchor it with hurricane straps.
Tree branch trim near house. We don't do tree work above ladder height — we refer to licensed Charlotte arborists. But we do remove low-hanging branches that touch siding or rub windows (these accelerate damage every storm).
Generator Transfer Switch & Cord Outlets
After the 2024 Helene outage, generator demand in Charlotte tripled. We install transfer switches and dedicated inlet boxes for portable generators.
Interlock kit on existing breaker panel: 2.5–3.5 hours. $295–$425 in labor. This is the budget option — a sliding bracket on the main panel lets you connect a portable generator through the main breaker. NC code-legal when installed correctly.
Dedicated 6-circuit transfer switch (Reliance, Generac): 4–6 hours. $475–$695 in labor plus the switch. This is the safer option — pre-selected circuits switch over automatically when you connect the generator.
Inlet box on the exterior wall: 1.5–2 hours. $185–$245 in labor. The 30A or 50A box that mounts outside the house so you don't have to run a cord through a window.
We coordinate with a licensed Charlotte electrician for the final breaker-panel tie-in — we handle everything up to the panel, then schedule the licensed cut-in. This saves you 40–50% vs hiring a full electrician for the whole job.
Ice-Storm Prep (December–February)
Charlotte averages 1–2 ice storms a winter. The damage profile is different from hurricanes — less wind, more pulled gutters and downed branches from ice weight.
Gutter brackets and hangers: $125–$225 to add reinforcement brackets every 32 inches on gutters that look slightly bowed. Ice in a 6-inch K-style gutter weighs about 5 lbs per linear foot — a 30-foot gutter run holds 150 lbs of ice in a moderate storm. Original builder-grade hangers were sized for water weight, not ice.
Outdoor faucet covers: $35–$55 to install foam covers on every exterior hose bib. Charlotte's hard freezes are short (2–4 days) but a cracked outdoor faucet that leaks inside the wall causes $1,200–$3,500 in drywall damage.
Pipe insulation in unheated crawl spaces: $85–$165. Foam pipe sleeves on the supply lines in the crawl space. Many older Charlotte homes (Plaza Midwood, NoDa, Elizabeth) have crawl spaces — pipes there are the first to freeze.
After-Storm Triage
We don't do emergency response — we're not 24/7. But we book day-after triage starting at 7 AM the morning after a major storm.
Gutter re-attachment, fascia re-secure: $95–$185. Most-common post-storm call.
Tarp on partial roof damage: $145–$245. We can tarp until your roofer schedule opens up (Charlotte roofers are 2–4 weeks backed up after major storms). Tarp is a temporary fix.
Fence repair (sections blown over): $125–$285 per section. We carry standard 4x4 brackets and replacement pickets.
Debris removal from yard around the house: not our specialty. We refer to lawn-care crews.
